  • by

The patient Yury Mykolayovych Omelchuk, born in 1978, a senior lieutenant in military unit A1302, turned to our Foundation.

During the hostilities on May 1, 2022, in the area of the settlement of Velyka Komyshevakha, he suffered an explosive injury due to the detonation of a car on a mine. First aid was provided to him in the Barvinkiv hospital, then he was taken to the Blyznyuki hospital, where primary surgical treatment of the wounds and fasciotomy of the foot were performed. He underwent further treatment at the Kharkiv Military Hospital, and then at the Kyiv Military Hospital. On May 10, 2022, osteosynthesis of the fragments of the main phalanx of the first toe of the left foot was performed with needles. Then he was transferred to the Vinnytsia Military Hospital, where on May 22, 2022, osteosynthesis of fractures of the phalanx of the first finger with two plates and osteosynthesis of fractures of the third and fifth metatarsal bones with plates was performed. From August to October 2022, he was treated in a military hospital in Zaragoza (Spain), where Yuri underwent four surgical interventions.

At the time of the examination, Yuriy has the consequences of a mine-explosive injury to the left foot: varus deformation of the first metatarsal bone, partial (complete?) necrosis of the main phalanx of the first toe of the left foot with valgus and dorsal deformation of the first toe; consolidated fractures of the 3, 4 and 5 metatarsal bones, the condition after plasticity of the medial surface of the left foot with a skin-fascial flap on the feeding leg, pronounced cicatricial changes of the body surface of the foot, impaired support and gait function of the left foot.

In order to restore the function of Yuri’s left foot as much as possible, staged reconstructive and restorative operations using cell technologies and 3D printing technologies are shown.

The treatment is planned to be carried out in several stages.

During the first stage, it is planned to correct the varus deformity of the first metatarsal bone of the left foot, lengthen the tendon of the dorsal flexor of the first toe of the left foot, and eliminate the pathological position of the first toe.

The cost of the first stage of treatment is UAH 49,979 (approximately USD 1,460 or EUR 1,460).

During the second stage of treatment (approximately 2 months after the first stage), it is planned to carry out a revision of the bone wound of the main phalanx of the first toe of the left foot, the collection of red bone marrow and a fragment of the fibula bone, and the formation of a recipient bed in the area of the main phalanx of the first toe and the formation of a bed for a transplant of the front abdominal wall. During this stage, mesenchymal stem cells and periosteal cells will be isolated from the red bone marrow and a fragment of the fibula bone, and the transplant will be modeled using 3D printing technology.

The cost of the second stage of treatment is UAH 156,814 (approximately USD 4,580 or EUR 4,580).

During the third stage of treatment (approximately 2-3 months after the third stage), the osteoprogenitor graft of the main phalanx of the first toe of the left foot is planned to be placed in the bed on the anterior abdominal wall.

The cost of the third stage of treatment is UAH 12,558 (approximately USD 380 or EUR 380).

During the fourth stage (approximately 2 months after the third stage), it is planned to perform a transplant in the area of the defect of the main phalanx of the first toe of the left foot and perform plastic surgery of the medial portion of the capsule of the metatarsophalangeal joint.

The cost of the fourth stage of treatment is UAH 37,858. (approx. USD 1100 or EUR 1100).

Due to significant inflation, the cost of the second and subsequent stages may change.

We ask all concerned people and organizations to participate in the collection of funds for the treatment of the consequences of Yuri’s left foot combat wound. Thanks to your donations, Yuriy will be able to receive the necessary treatment, restore the maximum possible function of his left foot and return to a full life.
