We are pleased to inform you that on October 25, 2022, the first stage of surgical treatment of the patient Severin Oleksiy Maratovich was performed. During this stage, the rod apparatus was dismantled, which was located on the left leg, dead bone fragments of the left tibia were removed, and resection of the proximal and distal fragments of the tibia was performed within the healthy bone. After resection, the total defect of the tibia was 8 cm. Then, the bone fragments of the tibia were fixed by extrafocal osteosynthesis according to the Ilizarov method, and a semi-closed osteotomy of the tibia in the upper third was performed.
It should be noted that we performed the surgical treatment of Alexei in the conditions of the Department of Microvascular, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Institute. A.A. Shalimov, which is headed by Ph.D. Simulik Evgeny Vladimirovich.
This operation created the conditions for osteoplastic replacement of Oleksiy’s tibial defect and restoration of full weight-bearing of the left leg.
The implementation of this stage of surgical treatment was made possible thanks to the financial support of the ProBONE charitable foundation and its partner, the German association Armut und Gesundheit in Deutschland e.V.
Oleksiy ‘s second stage of treatment is planned approximately 4 months after the first stage. The cost of this stage is UAH 24,725 (approximately USD 690 or EUR 710).
